Eisteddfod

This section is currently being updated. We will be adding more information on the National Eisteddfod, plus places to stay, eat etc.

What attracts 160,000 visitors annually, is held alternately in North and South Wales, is one of the world’s greatest cultural festivals, is the BBC’s second largest outside broadcast event after Wimbledon and has an impact on the area it visits of some £6-8 million during the week?

It is, of course, the National Eisteddfod of Wales which last visited Wrexham in1977 and will be held here again on the land of Lower Berse Farm (i.e. between Ysgol Clywedog and the by-pass) in the first week of August 2011.

It is envisaged that the Eisteddfod will impact the area in a number of ways.

  • Linguistic impact-more people learning Welsh and a greater demand for Welsh medium education.
  • Cultural impact-more cultural and artistic activities locally leading up to, and after, the Eisteddfod.
  • Economic impact-from visits to the Eisteddfod and repeat visits from tourists plus an opportunity to sell the area to tourists. (Some 600-800 touring caravans will come to the Eisteddfod, for example.)
  • Community impact-bringing communities together to prepare for the Eisteddfod, joint working possibilities which may continue after the Eisteddfod has left.

Of course the Eisteddfod is quite a costly enterprise (approx £3.8million each year) but 70% of the cost is met by the Eisteddfod itself. The catchment area of the Eisteddfod is the area covered by Wrexham Borough Council and, wherever the Eisteddfod visits, local appeals committees are established. A target of £30,000 has been set for the Offa Community Council area to be raised between now and August 2011. Offa Community Council itself has pledged £9,000 towards this total of £30,000. A local appeals committee is shortly to be established to prepare a programme of activities to raise the remaining £21,000. The activities can be as varied as you like and, provided the activities are legal and above board, they will be welcomed! We have spoken to Offa Community Council about the use of their centres for events and this has received a positive response.

If you have any ideas about fund-raising activities please contact Edgar Lewis on 01978-359681 or Medwyn Edwards on 01978-364733 (Vice Chair and Chair respectively of the Eisteddfod`s Finance Committee. Equally, if you are prepared to serve on a fund-raising committee please contact the same two people. (Translators will be provided at the meetings if necessary)
